When you let anyone form your emotional core - may be you were innocent at that time - or that was the best available and you need to hold on to something - it's difficult to let them go. Think that's the case with love and breaking up. But i am talking about Ilayaraja. This man defined the tastes of an entire generation of people of tamil nadu. Can't define the feeling. Growing up on Ilayaraja's music and how he kept up for so long addressing the varied moods of millions of people. Now i listen to lot of music in the west and recognize various styles and still immensely in love with various works of several artists. Radiohead. Goldfrapp. Rush. Tool. So many. BUT always go back to Ilayaraja every now and then. Not just nostalgic. It's still so good. In fact, this post is because of a CD i can't pull out of the player. It's been playing 3 or 4 times round and round. Various Ilayaraja great songs.
Why it's so good?. One of the reasons i can think of. Most songs in the west don't induce that emotional involvement because... there is no detailed tune, rhythm and voice. They got just movement. Of the shifting restless kind. When you take an Ilayaraja song - there is a solid grounding mechanism for 5 whole minutes. And he can repeat the same in different ways for how long..? 15 - 20 or 30 years may be?. In hundreds of albums?. I still rememmber. Diwali times. Kamal, Rajini, Mohan films. And Raja would score(compose for) like 6 or 7 films out of 10 films. That is 6 or 7 albums released in a day...!. Of which 3 or 4 will have truly great numbers. Sometimes all of them(will have). Sheer quality and quantity. If you are inundated in such a bliss, leaves a life long impact. Can't come out easily from it. Why would you ever want to, especially when you know it's good?. Anyway let me add some samples instead of boring people to death... ;)
